lEARN FROM THE EXPERT
JONA CAPARAS
MSN, RN, VA-BC
Vascular Access Consultant, President-AVANY, Consultant/Educator-PICC/Midlines /UGPIV/
Vascular Access, New York
Jona is the co-founder and President of the Association of Vascular Access New York Metro Network, USA (AVANY). She has served on the Board of Directors of the Philippine Nurses Association of New York, Inc. (PNA_NY) for the past 10 years and was a co-chair of Education for the Friends of the Philippines Society of New York, USA.
Jona has over 30 years of nursing experience, with 25 years in infusion therapy in various settings, including radiology, oncology/bone marrow transplants, orthopedics, and pediatrics. She received her Master's Degree in Nursing-Executive Leadership and Health Care Management at Long Island University in Brooklyn, New York, and her Bachelor's Degree in Nursing at Central Luzon Doctors' Hospital-Educ. Inst., Philippines, earning both the Highest in Academic and Florence Nightingale Awards. She is currently working on obtaining her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP).
Jona's combined experience in leadership and hands-on clinical practice keeps her current and up-to-date with patient care. She believes that working at the bedside gives her an opportunity to stay abreast of patient care and improve patient outcomes. She has worked in various hospitals in the city, including Cabrini Medical Center, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Lenox Hill Hospital, Mount Sinai Hospital, New York Hospital Queens, Westchester Medical Center, Maria Fareri Children's Hospital, NY Presbyterian Hospital, home infusion companies, and Epicc Vascular Access.
Jona is also a Vascular Access Consultant and a national lecturer on vascular access. She teaches vascular access insertion and conducts research on vascular access best practices. Her 2014 randomized prospective trial, "Safe administration of Vancomycin through a novel midline," led to changes in the Infusion Standards of Practice 2016, removing PH as an indication for central line placement and potentially saving millions of lives each year. Her research also prompted the medical product manufacturer to improve their current midlines and develop new midlines, inadvertently decreasing central line and PICC usage and reducing central line bloodstream infections. She has published several articles on vascular access that have had a significant impact on patient care on a global scale. In addition, she implemented the first Rapid Response Team in a Long Term Care Facility in 2011.
Jona is a member of HAI committees and recommends evidence-based practice on preventing and reducing infections. She facilitates continuing education and point prevalence initiatives. She is also a member of various nursing organizations. During the height of the pandemic, she was featured at Brooklyn Bridge Park, New York, as one of the healthcare heroes and helped combat Asian hate crimes. She recently won first place in the People's Choice Poster Competition at AVA2023 for her poster titled "How to prevent Phlebitis with Vancomycin Infusion: Have we learned anything?".
