IV Insertion and Vascular Access Care (4 hrs)

IV insertion and vascular care are crucial aspects of modern healthcare. With IV insertion, healthcare professionals skillfully insert a needle into a patient's vein to administer fluids, and medications, or draw blood. Properly executed IV insertion ensures accurate delivery of treatments while minimizing discomfort for the patient. Vascular care involves the assessment, treatment, and management of conditions affecting the blood vessels, ensuring optimal blood flow throughout the body. Skilled healthcare providers with expertise in IV insertion and vascular care play a vital role in improving patient outcomes and enhancing overall healthcare experiences.

In this course, we will learn the essential skills and knowledge required for IV insertion and vascular access care. Understanding the importance of aseptic technique, we will master the art of safely accessing veins to deliver vital fluids and medications. We will delve into the anatomy of veins, exploring the various sites suitable for cannulation and confidently identifying potential risks and complications. Engaging in hands-on practice sessions, we will hone our abilities to select the appropriate catheter size and technique for different patient populations, ensuring optimal patient comfort and safety. By the end of this course, we will be equipped with the expertise and confidence needed to navigate the complexities of IV insertion and provide exceptional vascular access care.

Course Outline:

  • Define IV therapy

  • Infusion Therapy Standards of Practice

  • Types of Vascular Access Devices

Ultrasound Guided PIV (UGPIV) (5 hrs)

Must have prior IV skills IN ORDER TO REGISTER

Ultrasound-guided IV insertion is a cutting-edge technique that revolutionizes the process of delivering intravenous therapy. By utilizing real-time imaging, this procedure allows healthcare professionals to precisely locate and access patients' veins. Gone are the days of multiple failed attempts and painful experiences; with ultrasound guidance, the success rate of IV insertions significantly improves. This technique proves to be especially beneficial for patients with challenging venous access, such as the elderly or those with difficult veins. With the aid of ultrasound, healthcare providers can enhance patient comfort, minimize complications, and ensure efficient and accurate IV placement.

In this course, we will learn the essential skills and techniques for ultrasound-guided IV insertion. Through a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical hands-on training, participants will gain proficiency in locating veins accurately using ultrasound guidance. Students will develop a comprehensive understanding of ultrasound machine operation, probe handling, and image interpretation to ensure successful venous access. This course provides an invaluable opportunity for healthcare professionals to enhance their clinical expertise and improve patient care by mastering the art of ultrasound-guided IV insertion.

Course Outline:

  • Define UGPIV

  • Infusion Therapy Standards of Practice

  • CRBSI and Infections

  • Identify fundamentals of ultrasound

  • Identify the proper technique for measuring the depth and patency of veins

  • Catheter selection and vein ratio

Picc/Midline Class (8 hrs)

Must have prior IV good skills IN ORDER TO REGISTER

PICC lines and Midlines are valuable medical tools for patients requiring long-term intravenous access. Inserted by trained healthcare professionals, these catheters provide a reliable path for administering medication, fluids, or nutrition directly into the bloodstream. PICC lines, or Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters, are typically inserted in the upper arm and threaded through a large vein until reaching the superior vena cava. They are suitable for patients requiring treatment for an extended duration. On the other hand, Midlines are shorter catheters that are inserted into the upper arm but do not reach the central veins. They are a suitable option for patients needing intravenous therapies for a medium duration. Both PICC lines and Midlines serve as essential tools in patient care, ensuring comfort, efficiency, and minimizing potential complications.

In this course, we will discover the essential knowledge and skills needed to confidently insert and care for PICC and Midline catheters. Gain a comprehensive understanding of the anatomy, indications, and contraindications for these intravenous lines, empowering you to make informed decisions during patient care. Through hands-on practice and interactive discussions, master the techniques for sterile insertion, maintenance, and troubleshooting of PICC and Midline catheters. Learn how to assess and manage complications, ensuring patient safety and optimizing outcomes.
Explore best practices for medication administration, blood sampling, and infection control specific to PICC and Midline catheters. Grasp the fundamentals of sterile technique, catheter securement, and avoiding complications related to improper insertion or maintenance.
By the end of the course, you will be equipped with the necessary skills to safely and effectively use PICC and Midline catheters, enhancing your abilities as a healthcare professional. Join our expert instructor and fellow learners on this educational journey, and further your career in infusion therapy.

*Achieving proficiency in PICC and midline insertion requires direct experience through patient insertions under supervision by your employer.
